There's still a whiff of 60s counter-culture in Fairfax, where the Jefferson Airplane once played softball with the Grateful Dead. This town of 7,500 residents that sits just north of Mt. Tam is 30 minutes from San Francisco and 17 miles from Pt. Reyes. 

 

The heart of Fairfax is Broadway Boulevard—a perfect walking street where locals have coffee at the Coffee Roastery and purchase fresh organic food at Good Earth. Turn down Bolinas Ave and support local boutiques like Eleventh House, Conifer, and Emma’s Shop. Cyclists head to Gestalt Haus for a beer and a bratwurst, while yogis check in to Padma Studio. At night, Fairfax offers great restaurants and a fun music scene.
